AUCKLAND: Contrary to expectations, and predictions, that the pitch would help spinners on the final day, the bat continued to dominate the ball leading the third and final test between India and New Zealand to end in a draw at Eden Park here today.

By virtue of their first test win, the second was drawn, the Kiwis clinched the series 1-0.

New Zealand, 416 for five overnight, added 67 runs this morning before declaring at 483 without further loss an over before lunch.

Left with a near impossible task of scoring 393 runs for victory off 64 overs, India gave a robust reply of 149 for no loss when the match was ended with 10 of the 20 mandatory overs remaining.

Despite overnight rain, which delayed the start by 45 minutes and another interruption of 40 minutes, the wicket remained unaffected. As many as 216 runs were scored on the last day without a wicket falling. In all, 1505 runs were scored in this test for the loss only 25 wickets,

In New Zealand’s second innings, Andrew Jones raised his personal score from 144 overnight to an unbeaten 170 with two sixes and 15 fours. Debutant Shane Thomson, eight last evening, over shadowed his senior partner in stroke production remaining not out with 43 (8 fours).
