BEIRUT, Oct 3, Reuter: Kidnappers released Indian College Professor Mithileshwar Singh in Moslem West Beirut on Monday after holding him nearly 20 months, a senior security source said.
The source, whose information has been reliable in the past, said Syrian officers and troops were escorting Singh to Damascus. The 60 year old teacher holds an Indian passport but has the right of permanent residence in the United States.
In Damascus, Syrian Minister of State for foreign affairs Nasser Qaddour told reporters a foreign hostage had been released but did not identify him.
Syrian Intelligence Officers who had set up checkpoints ground Beirut University College where Singh taught said a freed hostage was on his way to the Syrian Capital.
