JULLUNDUR, Punjab, India: A large number of Akali Dal (L) leaders of Kapurthala district announced their decision to defect to U.A.D. ranks. This was stated hereby Sukhjinder Singh, a U.A.D. leader who belongs to this district. The defected persons include S. Hazura Singh Wadala, a member of S.G.P.C. and ex-chairman of Market Committee, Kapurthala, Dara Singh, an exVice Chairman of Market Committee Dhilwan and Sadhu Singh. Mr. Sukhjinder Singh alleged that two leaders were taken away by Balwant Singh, a former Finance Minister to block their defection. According to him there was a big response to a “Dharna” call at Kapurthala on January 2, 1988.
Sukhjinder Singh called upon the government not to create hurdles in organizing “Dharnas” at different places. He called upon the Central government to solve the Punjab problem and described its attitude as undemocratic.
Mr. Amarinder Singh, a former Patiala ruler, declared that there could be no unity with Akali Dal (L) as Balwant and Barnala had tried to mislead the Sikhs on every occasion in the past.
