TOKYO, Aug. 9, Reuter: Police arrested five rightists near the Soviet Embassy today as about 700 demonstrators demanded the return to Japan of four northern islands held by the Soviet Union since the end of the Second World War

Loudspeakers on cars blared “Return the northern territory” and other slogans for several hours. as 1,000 riot police kept the protesters several hundred meters (yards) from the Embassy.

 

Police said they arrested five demonstrators who kicked them and tried to break through the cordon.

The protest marked the 42nd anniversary of the Soviet entry into the war against Japan.

It occupied the islands off Hokkaido and has ignored frequent demands by Tokyo for their return.
