MADRAS(PTI): Tennis maestro Ramanathan Krishnan feels India’s chances of winning their quarterfinal Davis cup tie against France next month are ‘rather bleak.”

“No doubt, our boys will strive to win, but I rate the French to have a distinct edge over us as they play on their favorite clay surface and on their home soil,’ the former Davis cup skipper said.

Talking about rising star Leander Peas, he said ‘Peas has to shoot into the top within the next two years.”

He said the Davis cupper should have started playing in the senior league after winning the Wimbledon title like his son Ramesh.

The younger Krishnan started playing in senior level tournaments way back in 1978 when he was still a junior.

Krishnan recalled how he himself had reached the Wimbledon semifinal when only 21.

Tennis, he said, was a hectic game and one cannot exhibit the Same amount of agility and stamina at a later Stage. Tennis aspirants abroad mature much faster, he added.

India overcame last year’s runner’ sup Switzerland 32atCaleuta in March and play the quarters in Frejus, France next month.
