BOMBAY: The Indian cricket team for the forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka was named here’ peony: The squad of 16 will be ted by Mohammad Azharuddin with Sachin Tendulkar his deputy.

The five man selection committee  comprising Gundappa Vishwanath (chairman), Anshuman Gackwad, Rusi Jecjebhoy, Anand Shuklaand Ravinder Chadhadid Not want to experiment with new faces and stuck to the players who did duty in the memorable series against England and Zimbabwe al home,

Cricket manager Ajit Wadekar and skipper Azharuddin were also present at the meeting.

On the elevation of Tendulkar as the vice-captain, Wadekar said:

Sachin is captaincy material for the future.”’ and hence needed to be groomed,

Wadekar who was mainly responsible for the upswing in Indian team’s fortunes after the disastrous South African tour, said three specialist spinners Anil kumble, Venkatapathi Raju and Rajesh chowhan will be preferred in Test matches while for the one dyers one of the spinners will make way for a medium pacer.

“The balling looks very strong and even a batsman of Sanjay Manjrekar’s calibre cannot he fitted into the present team,”’ Wadekar said.
