NEW DELHI(PTI):India and China are expected to finalize an agreement on confidence: building measures to maintain peace and tranquility along their border during the sixth meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) to be held here on June 2526, Indications are that the agreement, if finalized, would be signed during the prime minister, P.Y.Narasimha Rao’s visit to China, possibly in September. The Chinese vice foreign minister, Tang Jia Xuan, will arrive here Wednesday night for the meeting. The Indian side will be led by foreign secretary, J.N,Dixit. External affairs ministry officials said the two sides had made good progress in formulating useful confidence building measures.

They had, for instance, established the system of regular meetings between their military per sonnel at Bumla pass in the eastern sector and Spanggur gap area in the westerm sector. Apart from these scheduled meetings al these two designated points in June and October every year, the border commanders had also been establishing contacts and holding meetings whenever need arose, a ministry spokesman said.

The JWG setup in 1988 to find fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement of the boundary question.
