Ottawa — in an unusual reconciliatory gesture the Canadian High commission sent special courier delivery invitations to all Sikhs inviting them to the Independence Day reception on August 15, 1985. The special courier delivery invitation has been sent only to Sikhs. To Hindus invitations have gone by ordinary mail.

Sikh congregations in various Gurdwaras have rejected the invitation and sent the following letter to the High commission.

“We, the Sikhs of Canada, thank High Commissioner of India and Shrimate Chhatwal for their kind invitation at a reception on the independence day August 15, 1985 from 18.30 hrs. To 20.30 hrs. at 585 Acacia Ave. Rock cliff Park, Ontario, but regret our inability to attend because the Sikh community of Canada is observing 15th August as a mourning day throughout Canada because of the highest insults hurled on the Sikhs by the Government of India for the past three years and still continuing.”
