Another Stalwart Sikh advocate of social and political Causes since the fifties passed away at Bakersfield on June 29, 1995. The Bhog of Sahaj Path in memory of Mr. Mohanpuri on July 15 was well attended by relatives, friends and well-wishers coming from all over the ‘west coast and Canada. Mr. Mohanpuri was born in a family deeply involved with the Singh Sabha movement, on August, 1911, in Malaysia. He was orphaned at age five. Passion for education made him an advocate at the Alahabad High Court from where he successfully fought the case of Giani Ajmer Singh (Late Secretary, Shromni Akali Dal “The mother of Akali Dal,” according to Master Tara Singh), He retired from the American Embassy service after 20 years in 1973, Settled in New Dethi, Mr, Mohanpuri, through his writings, speeches, formal and informal advice was a pillar of strength for the Punjabi migrant Sikh community in Delhi. He was one of the founding presidents of the International Jat Sikh Association, New Delhi; and was the Editor in Chief of the JSA Journal. Since 1985, he spend most of his time in California, was committed to Democratic causes and until the last few months was in active correspondence with top leadership of the Democratic party, Among others, President Clinton also ex Pressed his sympathies to Mrs. Mohanpuri.

  1. Jagjit Singh Mohanpuri was a positive person with a missionary zeal 10 help not only social causes but also individuals in concrete pursuits of college education, jobs, business ventures, immigration and building new relationships. Helping others was his second nature.

He is survived by his lifelong partner, Sardarni Mahinder Kaur Mohanpuri, only daughter Yashpal Kaur Brar, married to Dr. Bharpur Singh Brar and three grandsons: Dr. Harpreet Singh Brar of Boise, Idaho Harmect Singh Brar of Moro Bay; Harmanmit, Singh Brar of St. Lucia. In addition to his numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives, Mr. Mohanpuri will be missed by hundreds of his friends spread over three continents.
