NEW DELHI: Delhi Police last week picked up three men, believed to be- long to the Babbar Khalsa, sent to carry out human bomb attacks on two Delhi Congress leaders, Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar.

Two of these men were arrested near New Delhi railway station by the special branch of Delhi Police while the third was nabbed from a trans-Yamuna locality. The trio, produced in a Tis Hazari court last week, has been remanded to police custody for 10 days. The Special Branch chief, B.S. Bola told media persons that they had seized an AK-56 assault rifle, a kilogram of RDX explosive and 70 live cartridges from hideouts in Uttam Nagar and Ghaziabad.

Those arrested have been identified. as Harpreet Singh alias Preet alias Nikka Baba (24), a resident of Uttam Nagar, Charanjeet Singh alias lecta (24) of Ghaziabad and Jyot Singh (30)

Bola claimed that Harpreet and Charanject were close to Jagtar Singh Hawara, prime suspect in the August 1 assassination of Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, Hawara is believed o have gone underground.

According to Bols, the group had received Rs 4 lakh from Germany through hawala transactions during be past three months. He said the car sed in the assassination of Beant Singh was purchased with this money. On Sept 3 Hawara took away Rs 2 lakh in the possession of Jyot Singh when he abandoned his Nandgaon hideout, the Special Branch chief said.

It is alleged that Jyot Singh was Babbar Khalsa’s “coordinator” in Delhi and also a member of Akhand Kirtani Jatha, the outfit’s front organization.

He apparently motivated Harpreet and Charanject to go over to Pakistan for weapons training. The two were eventually conditioned to act as human bombs to target VVIPS.

Bola said Harpreet and Charanjeet had allegedly crossed over to Pakistan for training as recently as last year. “This indicates that Pakistan’s secret service, Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), has stepped up its efforts to revive militancy in Punjab.”

Bola pointed out the arrests were an indication that might have already entered the Capital with the intention. of creating havoc militants. Interrogation of the trio revealed that Hawara was organizing the group for indulging in violence in the Capital. There are suspicions of plans to target some of the ‘protected persons, including Jagdish Tytler and Sajjar Kumar.

Bola said the three had already met Babbar Khalsa militants during “samagams” of Akhand Kirtani Jatha.
