SRINAGAR: Troops killed three militants and captured nine during over-night operations in the Kashmir valley, while Donald Fred Hutchings of the US, one of the four foreign tourists held hostage by Al-Faran, told the authorities on Aug. 28, that all of them “are safe and alive,” report agencies.

An official spokesman said that Hutchings spoke to the officials on wireless during negotiations between Al-Faran and the government over the release of the hostages.

“We are on the job and hope to resolve the hostage crisis amicably,” official sources said. Scholarship Awards for 1995-96

The Sikh Education Aid Fund has just announced the awards it has made for 1995-96. These awards have been made after examining the application forms submitted by each applicant. Some of these applicants have had awards made to them in previous years and they were renewed based on their academic performance. The successful candidates are:

  2. Jalmeen Kaur Makkar of Chicago, IL is doing her second year in the Ph.D program in Psychology at George Mason Univ, Fairfax, VA..
  3. Sumit Singh Choudhry of Silver Springs, MD – Second year computer science, Mongomery College, Rockville, MD.
  4. Sandeep Singh Tull of East Hills, NY Second year at New York University.
  5. Bikramjit Singh Sohal of Chandigarh India – He will be starting his MBA at Yale University, Conn.
  6. Amanjot K. Khara of Woodbridge VA – She is now in the second year in Dental Surgery at Loma Linda University, CA.
  7. Sandeep Kaur Kaisth of Burke, VA – She will be starting her Masters in Nutrition at James Madison University, VA.
  8. Damanjit Kaur of Chicago, IL – Secondary yr in P.A. program at Chicago Medical School, IL.
  9. Kavi I.S. Virk of Bakersfield, CA – Third year, Finance & International Business at Georgetown University, DC.
  10. Navroop Kaur Jassal of San Diego, CA – Second year, Environmental Science, University of CA, Berkeley.
  11. Simarjot Kaur Jassal of San Diego, CA Second year at the Medical School, University of CA, San Francisco, School of Medicine.
  12. Priyadarsh K. Tuisl of Silver Springs, MD – Second year, University of Va Medical School, Charlottesville, VA. 14. Manka Dhingra of Concord, CA – Now completing her Senior year in Political Science Major, University of CA, Berkeley.
