CANDIGARH, India, March 14, Reuter: Gunmen have shot dead at least 18 people, including a family of four, in separate incidents in the North Indian state of Punjab, police and news agency reports said on Monday.

Five villagers died when gunmen opened fire indiscriminately in Hoshiarpur district, the Press Trust of India reported.

Police in the state capital of Chandigarh said several gunmen sprayed automatic fire at a Sikh family, killing a man, his wife and two sons, in a village near tarn taran town before setting their house ablaze on Monday.

At the same time five other gunmen burst into a grocer’s shop at Majhpur village in the Amritsar district, killing two Hindus and two Sikh men.

Five other people, including a freedom fighter was killed in an alleged police encounter with the police, were killed in violence on Sunday, police said,
