NEW DELHI, India: Gunmen opened fire on Tuesday on holiday fairs in a Southern suburb of New Delhi, Killing at least three people and injuring eight, police said.

They said four men, two riding in a motor scooter and two on a motorcycle, attacked at least two gatherings with submachine guns in Chittaranjan Park in South Delhi at about 10 p.m.

The gunmen escaped after the attack.

The fair was one of hundreds of festive gatherings throughout the Indian capital in anticipation of Diwali, the festival of lights marking the Hindu New Year, on Thursday.
