NEW DELHI: The external affairs minister, Gujral ruled out the immediate recall of the high commissioner to the U.K., Kuldip Nayar, but agreed to consider a suggestion for asking him to go on leave pending an inquiry into the alleged callousness shown in providing treatment to the former chief justice, Sabyasachi Mukherjee.
Despite a unanimous demand from members of the Lok Sabha for the immediate recall of Nayar, the minister did not budge and offered to order an inquiry by a Supreme Court judge or by KK. Venu Gopal, president of the Supreme Court bar association (SCBA),
A visibly angry senior Janata Dal leader, Chandrasekhar, took the minister to task for treating the matter lightly and said the high commissioner should be withdrawn immediately.
When the minister refused to concede the demand, Chandrashekhar said Indrajit Gupta’s suggestion for at least asking Nayar to proceed on leave should be accepted.
“It will receive my attention,” Gujral said amidst objections from: the Congress (I) benches.
