TORONTO: Almost half of Toronto’s Grade 12 students have not learned to write at a level considered acceptable by the province, a new study shows.

The province wide results are difficult to interpret because the definition of what constitutes acceptable writing is a subjective one, said Liz Barkley, president of the 46,000 member Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation.

“I would say that we (teachers) are doing quite well when two thirds of our students can write at an advanced level. People have to understand we’re never going to have a full cup.”
