AMRITSAR, Punjab, India Guru Nanak Dev University has again emerged as number one university in sports from amongst the 150 such institutions in the country. It has won the Dr. BL. Gupta Overall General Championship Trophy for the year 198687 with 296 points.

‘A letter stating this has been received from the Association of Indian Universities, Delhi, Dr. M.S. Sandhu, Director of Sports of the University, said here

Punjabi University, Patiala, stands runners-up with 194 points and Poona University third with 166.

The Dr. BLL. Gupta Overall General Championship Trophy was instituted by the Association of Indian Universities in 1980814 and is awarded each year purely on the basis of sports achievements in interuniversity tournaments. Guru Nanak Dev University won the trophy in 198081, 198384, 198485 and 198586; they ‘were runners-up in 198182 and 198283.

During 198687, the university won seven all India interuniversity championships and finished runners-up in six. They stood third in two championships.
