AMRITSAR, Punjab, India, Oct. 2, Reuter: Gunmen shot dead three policemen riding in a rickshaw and two civilians near the Sikh holy city of Amritsar on Friday, police said.

The gunmen opened fire when they encountered the three policemen riding in the motorised rickshaw. The driver was also killed, the police said.

The fifth man was killed near the Bears area of Amnitsar district, they added.

The killings took place three days after gunmen killed nine people in a village in neighboring Gurdaspur district. The two districts, bordering Pakistan, are centers of the campaign for an independent Sikh nation carved out of Punjab.
