CALCUTTA, Dec 28, Reuter: About 70 people are feared drowned after a river ferry sank in Eastern India, officials said on Wednesday.

They said one body had been recovered from the scene of Tuesday’s accident in the Malda district of West Bengal state bordering Bangladesh. Rescue operations were continuing.

The Press Trust of India said the ferry was carrying more than 100 people but that 35 had managed to swim to safety. Further details were not available.

Nearly 200 people are feared dead in another ferry disaster in Bangladesh on Tuesday.
