NEW DELHI: In the just concluded poll in the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region, the National Conference of Farooq Abdullah won almost a two thirds majority in the 87member State Assembly and is all set to form government there. The main opponents of the national conference — the Congress (1), the Janata Dal and the B.J.P.—could not get more than twenty seats all put together. For the first time, the C.P.M. won a seat, Kulgam, where the state unit Chief M.Y. Tarigami was victorious.
Dr. Abdullah is committed to seek the pre1953 status for Kashmir and most Indian political parties as well as the Indian government stated that they would hold discussions with the party that won a majority in the Kashmir house. Dr, Abdullah in his initial reaction said that the people had voted against the gun cultures and that his government would give priority to make available essential supplies on the eve of the onset of winter.
