Chandigarh — Akali government is facing a very difficult situation in relation to the problems of the farmers. Food Corporation of India is not purchasing rice from the grain markets in Punjab and the procurement price fixed by the Agricultural Prices Commission is far from satisfactory.

In a meeting of District Jathedars at Chandigarh a strongly worded resolution condemning the non-purchase of rice, non-fixation of rates for the sugar cane and cotton was adopted. The reaction of S. Parkash Singh Badal, who is considered to be a great champion of the farmers, is eagerly awaited.

There is also considerable surprise over the Akali government’s assurance to the Centre over the completion of SYL canal by the end of 1986. It is being argued that Akali Dal was always opposed to the construction of this canal and had in fact launched an agitation at Kapoori against its construction.
