AMSTERDAM, Reuter: Old rivals Denmark and England qualified for the Badminton world team finals in Kuala Lumpur in both the men’s Thomas Cup and Women’s Uber Cup when they won their European zone semifinals on Saturday.

They will compete for the accolade of zone winner on Sunday and for the advantage of a better seeding position in three months’ time in Malaysia,

Sweden and the Netherlands will have to battle for the one remaining qualifying place in the men’s and Women’s events after they were beaten in the semifinals of both competitions.

Sweden is expected to accompany Denmark and England to Kuala Lumpur but the Netherlands may provide an upset in the Uber Cup playoff for third place. It was their seventh success in nine games since they entered the tournament in 1956.

The way was cleared for their triumph when Czechoslovakia scored a Surprise 5-2 win over medal contenders Finland earlier.

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, New Zealand safely negotiated the final morning of the second cricket test against England on Monday and a draw is now almost certain. Night watchman Martin Snedden and Mark Great batch, playing in his first test, safely saw out the second new ball with few problems. Snedden was not out on 19 and Great batch was just two short of a maiden test half century.
