PALM BAY, Fla., April 24, (Reuter): At least eight people were killed and 12 wounded when a man with a high-powered rifle went on a wild shooting spree in two Florida shopping cents, police and emergency agency officials said.
The gunman, who barricaded inside a supermarket, released two women hostages early today but was still holding a man, Palm Bay police spokesman Louise Brown said.
Police were still negotiating by telephone with the gunman in an effort to persuade him to surrender.
Brown said two police officers who tried to stop the gunman were among the eight people confirmed dead in the shootings at Palm Bay, a small Atlantic coastal town 30 miles south of Cape Canaveral.
