CHANDIGARH India: Eight persons, including five intruders from Pakistan and freedom fighters were killed and eight arrested in Punjab since past 24 hours.

Pawan Kumar, a kariana shop owner at Poldiwal village, under Jullundur Sadar police station, was killed on Monday night by two gunmen.

The gunmen came to the shop of the deceased and shot him dead from a close range.

Two Sikh youngmen were also arrested.

A BSF press release at Jullundur said five intruders were killed and five escaped in two encounters in Kahangarh and Mahawa border, outposts in Amritsar district on Sunday.

Two gunmen tried to loot a petrol pump in Mehbaran village in Ludhiana district. While on of them was killed by the petrol pump owner and his family, the other was caught and handed over to the police.

The Batala police arrested Ajit Singh of Kalanaur village on the charge of sheltering the freedom fighters, the police said on Monday.
