NEW DELHI India: At least eight people died and 12 were injured in two clashes in Gujarat state the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported. Three people died and 10 were injured last night when police opened fire at Hindu Moslem rioters in Baroda. Another man died of knife wounds PTI said Four people died at Rajpipla in Broach district near Baroda in a clash triggered by a dispute over a girl who picked groundnuts from a field. PTT said authorities clamped a curfew on parts of Baroda after yesterday’s sectarian fighting with knives acid-filled bulbs and stones.

Police fired one shot in the air this morning to break up rival groups pelting each other with stones the agency said.

Mehta Barodas Police Commissioner told reporter’s trouble flared after a warehouse was set ablaze in the city’s old quarter. Some houses and vehicles were also burned.

Gujarat has been rocked by frequent Hindu Moslem fighting. There have been at least 12 major outbreaks in the western state so far this year and 57 people died in July.
