NEW DELHI: Sarabjit Singh Bhatti, a militant belonging to the Khalistan Commando Force (KCF) outfit deported from Canada, was taken into custody by a Punjab Police special team at Indira Gandhi International Airport here on Saturday. Police sources said Bhatti was deported by the Canadian Immigration Department on confirmation or his involvement in subversive activities and killings in Punjab and elsewhere. Bhatti was declared a proclaimed offender after he jumped bail in Punjab in the early 90’s, they said.

He was granted refugee status by Canada after reaching the country in 1991. Bhatti went underground to evade deportation after his militant connections came to light. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police finally arrested him from Surrey, a Vancouver suburb in February. Bhatti was subsequently granted bail by an immigration adjudicator on furnishing 5,000 Canadian dollars as security but was taken into custody after the Canadian Intelligence Services provided clinching evidence of KCF’s involvement in mass killings in Punjab, the sources said.
