AMRITSAR: The Communist leaders, Bimla Dang and her husband, Satyapal Dang, members of the national council of the CPI, in a joint statement issued here, have demanded cancellation of panchayat elections where police force was used in getting the henchmen of ministers elected. The couple alleged that in Asal village near Patil, the police whisked away two candidates who had come to file their nominations for the posts of sarpanch. They said the panches not favored by the police officials or Congress (I) leaders were beaten up or threatened with dire consequences against filing nominations, creating 3 Situation for unanimous elections. In some cases, the relieves of militants got elected with the help of police. The Dangs charged that the Tam Taran police had allegedly made a lot of money for elected unopposed.

 JALANDHAR: The president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (Ambedkar), Devi Dass Nehar, has alleged that the ruling party had captured most elections by use of force and other unfair means.

Addressing a press conference here recently, Nahar said the government was making hectic efforts to win over the sarpanches by all means.

He said there were many instances where the police and the civil authorities had threatened the non-Congress (I) candidates with dire consequences if they did not retire in favor of the Congress (I) candidates.
