Dear Editor, the July 9, 1993 edition of the World Sikh News carried a news item captioned, “Maryland Sikh to ‘run for U.S. Congress.” I was pleased to see Neil Singh Dhillon, a young Sikh, currently holding a subcabinet level appointment in the Clinton Administration, taking a plunge to bid for an elective office as a member of the U.S. Congress: I commend Dhillon’s courage and enthusiasm to give up his appointed post as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

I was particularly pleased to read that “his primary aim was to address the issues of Human Rights Violations occurring in India and elsewhere and that he planned to implement an Indian American Task Force to thoroughly investigate the issue and make appropriate recommendations to the Congress and the White House.” I sincerely hope that members of Our Community will support him and that Dhillon is successful in his bid for the U.S. Congress.

I do want to make a minor correction and set the record straight, though, in that Dhillon would not be the first Indian American to be elected as a U.S, Congressman, The late Honorable Dalip Singh Saund served three terms as a U_S. Congressman from California in the late 1960’s. It should be pointed out that, as a legislator, Congressman Saund served on several powerful House Committees and Subcommittees, 1 hope when Neil Dhillon is elected as our Congress, like Dr.Saund, he, too, will be able to influence the legislation in creating jobs, improving the economy, and, above all, doing something about the terrible human right violations in India and in other parts of the world, Dr.Tara Singh Vienna, VA.
