NEW DELHI: A Nepalese, who hid 130 tola (about 1.5 ke) pf gold in his rectum in an unsuccessful attempt to smuggle the precious yellow metal, was arrested by customs authorities at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here on Monday morning Jan 9th.
Deputy Commissioner G.S. Sarna, the Chief of Customs at the IGI airport, said that the 22yearold Om Bahadur Rana had: hidden 13) gold biscuits of 10 tola each in his rectum in a bid to smuggle it.
The smuggled gold worth Rs 7.88 lakh and Saudi royal’s worth about Rs 60,000 were recovered from Rana. Mr. Sarna said Rana had landed from Air India flight number 732. Coming from Dubai and walked past green channel.
The customs officials suspected foul play when they noticed strange gait of Rana.
Gold is a heavy metal and it takes an expert to shove it inside human body and put on a ‘semblance of normalcy.
Mr. Sarna pointed out that such a modus operandi by gold smugglers was known to have been used in the past, though in such large quantities was still a rarity.
