CALCUTTA (PTI): Cuba is looking for a “third party” for the completion of its major nuclear power plant by 1995 to ensure adequate power for the economic and industrial development of the country, according to Cuban ambassador to India Ms. Olga Chamero Tries.

Addressing members of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and industry here on Nov.19, Ms.Trias said the power plant, which was being set up in collaboration with the former Soviet Union, had suffered a delay because of the political developments in that country. However, “We are looking for a third party” for the completion of the plant as scheduled,” she said.

Stating that the Cuban government had initiated several fiscal measures to strengthen its economy after the economic blockade was enforced by the United States; Ms.Tnas said her country was now urgently in need of adequate funds to keep the existing industries there going.

Taking this view into consideration, the Cuban government had decided to offer foreign joint collaborations with more than 51% Stake in some sectors, including Sugar, spare parts, fertilizer and energy.

The Cuban ambassador said since her country had a stable government and adequate infrastructure lot of foreign investors had expressed their willingness to setup industries there.

Over 500 firms had already made contacts with Cuba in this regard; she said adding that 20 joint venture projects on tourism would come up soon.
