NEW DELHI: A senior CPI leader has suggested Launching an nation-wide United campaign in defense of article 370 giving special status to the northern Indian state of Kashmir as part of a series of measures to restore normalcy in the troubled state.

After a two-day appraisal visit to the Kashmir valley, the CPI national council secretary, Chaturanan Mishra, MP, told PTI that Kashmir, with a long tradition of secularism, has still many people who are opposed to the idea of its merger with Pakistan.

The 13-point measures favored immediate release of persons like Ali Gani Lone, Shabir Ahamed Shah and Mian Ali Qayoom, screening of political prisoners in jail by a high court judge, in a time bound manner guarantee of free and fair elections, and negotiations with the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF).

Mishra said he had appealed to the JKLF leaders to condemn the attacks on Hindu houses and temples in the valley and see that political parties were allowed to function there.

Referring to the Indo-Pak border situation, Mishra pleaded for securing the border line as far as possible.
