NEW DELHI (PTI): The country celebrates the 523rd birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru (teacher) Nanak Dev ji on Nov.10.

The president and the prime minister greeted the people particularly the Sikh community on the eve of the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev ji.

In a message Dr.Shankar Dayal Sharma described Guru Nanak as a symbol of love tolerance and compassion who preached universal brotherhood and the importance of rendering service to humanity.

Narasimha Rao said the Sikh Gurus message of love and universal brotherhood has been a source of inspiration to all.

Thousands of men women and children also participated in a colorful procession organized by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara management committee Nov.9 to celebrate the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev. People belonging to various communities gave a befitting reception to the precisionist’s and Guru Granth Sahib. School bands and children in colorful uniforms marched with the procession.

The route of the procession was colorfully decorated and sweets and fruits were distributed.

Addressing the Youth Congress-I workers from Punjab on Tuesday the prime minister assured all possible assistance to the Punjab government in maintaining peace and said that no state could progress without peace.
