Chandigarh: In Punjab Assembly by elections in Jalandhar (Central) and Jalandhar (North), Mr. Manmohan Kalia defeated his rival Congress (I) nominee Mr. Yash from Jalandhar (central) by over 7,000 votes. While Vaid Om Parkash defeated Mr. Parkash by nearly 1300 votes. In 1980 elections Mr. Kalia, who is the state BJP Secretary, had lost to Mr. Yash by a margin of 480 votes only. The BJP leader has been elected thrice from this constituency and Mr. Yash had won the seat in 1972 and 1980, Kalia polled 23727 votes as against 16646 secured by Mr. Yash. The Akali sponsored Janata Party Candidate Mr. Des Raj Malhotra polled 4852 votes.
