NEW DELHI: Even as the Government kept mum on the official status of the Bofors enquiry the ruling Congress Party said here on Monday that the Howitzer gun probe should be wound up now as there is “nothing in the case”.

Congress (I) spokesman Chandulal Chandrakar told presspersons here on Monday that while he had “no idea” whether the Government intended to close the Bofors enquiry he was of the view that the process should stop.” Chandrakar said “We cannot waste money indefinitely.”

Answering questions on the issue Chandrakar said the “due process must continue till there was hope of something being found.” The: National Front Government headed by V.P. Singh could not find anything in the scandal though it tied for 10 months. “It means there is nothing in the case” Chandrakar concluded.

Government sources gave vent to the same feelings unofficially when they said that they expected no breakthrough in the case The Bofors money they said had probably been laundered many times over by now and the probe would be 2 “wild goose chase “In any case they felt the person (Rajiv Gandhi) against whom the charge was directed was no more.

This seemed to be the sentiment expressed by several Congress (I) MPs. However there is a section in the party which considers the decision of the Government to bury the enquiry as “inadvisable” and “unfortunate.”
