NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court last week stayed the trial court proceedings against senior Congress leader H.K.L. Bhagat in two 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases. Justice N.G. Nandi stayed the proceedings against Bhagat in the Satnami Bai and Darshan Kaur cases due to be heard later this month on a petition filed by the former minister praying for quashing of the charges and proceedings against him in the court of Additional Sessions Judge S.N. Dhingra. Justice Nandi also issued a notice to the Delhi State on August 14 to show cause why Bhagat’s petition be not admitted. Asking for a stay on the lower court proceedings, Bhagat’s Counsel D.D. Thakur and Ashish Bhagat contended that the complaints against the senior Congressman could be motivated by political considerations and were damaging his image.
