More than 1,000 children, accompanied by athletes from east and west, today, brought a “Flame ‘of Peace” to the Icelandic capital as US. President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met nearby to try to ease superpower tension.

The Flame, which has been earned over the world, was presented to Iceland’s Prime Minister Steingrimur Hermann son, who Said he hoped the two world leaders would pay heed to the Flame’s message of peace.

‘The flame is being run around the World in celebration of the ‘international year of peace and the 40th anniversary of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and both Reagan and Gorbachey have paid tribute to the project.

The Flame arrived at Keflavik airport and a relay of runners, including former Soviet 1,500 meters World Record holder Ludmilla Bragina and U.S, marathon runner Paul Winegarner, brought it the 50 kms (30 miles) to Reykjavik.

In a park less than a mile from the house where Reagan and Gorbachev were talking, the Icelandic children braved driving rain to accompany the runners on the final stretch, singing peace anthems.
