NEW DELHI, INDIA — Villagers rescued a 5year old boy from a kidnapper who had been paid to abduct the victim for a human sacrifice, the Times of India newspaper reported Friday.

The kidnapper, identified as “Chaitram,” kidnapped the boy Thursday and was carrying him away on a bicycle when a cart driver heard screams and informed villagers near the town of Raipur, 520 miles southeast of New Delhi.

The villagers freed the boy, identified as Sahdev, and captured the kidnapper.

Chaitram told police he was paid $60 by a resident of a nearby village who planned to sacrifice Sahdev to a goddess whom he believed had placed a curse on his daughter that was preventing her from getting married, the newspaper said.
