NEW DELHI: The Haryana Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala has resigned following large scale political violence charges against him.

Earlier, the Congress I demanded the arrest and dismissal of Chautala and the imposition of President’s rule charging him with involvement in the murder of an independent candidate in the bye-election to the Meham assembly seat.

The bye-election for Meham has been countermanded following the murder. Chauthala, who was a candidate in the election, happens to be the son of Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal. Elections for Meham were countermanded in February this year following widespread violence in the constituency where there were reports of booth rigging and vote capturing.

The demand was made after the house took up for discussion the Meham incident following suspension of the question hour.
