OTTAWA, Canada: Cetus Street in Nepean’s Rideau Heights business park will become Gurdwara Road following a successful application to Nepean Council by the Ottawa Sikh Society.
The society’s Gurdwara (Church of Sikhs) was the first building developed on the road two years ago and now serves more than 800. Sikh families in the Ottawa Carleton region.
The society said renaming the street would add to the sanctity of its place of worship and would strengthen multiculturalism in Nepean.
‘The application was granted by council after letter was circulated informing other businesses on the street of the proposed name change. Two letters of objection were received.
Council, however, concurred with Ald. Beryl Gaffney, who felt the objections expressed in the letters were not strong and a name change would not cause economic hardship to the businesses on the road.
