NEW DELHE: The Lok Sabha approved extending central rule in Punjab by six months, beyond May 11.

Mohammed Sayeed assured the house that the government hoped to bring the situation under control within one and a half months.

Replying to a four hour discussion on the resolution supported by all parties, Sayeed said assembly elections in the state would be held once a congenial atmosphere ‘was created.

Referring to Congress I criticism that the government was soft towards Akali leader Simranjit Singh Mann, who has demanded a plebiscite in Punjab, he said the government had clearly told him that any dialogue had to be within the framework of the constitution and that there would be no compromise on the country’s unity and integrity.
