NEW DELHI: Canada will provide a grant of 57.5 million Canadian dollars (Rs 845 million approximately) for the Rajasthan Agricultural drainage research project.
A memorandum of understanding to this effect was signed here Tuesday between Dr. Bimal Jalan, union finance secretary and James G. Harris Canadian High Commission on behalf of their respective governments.
The project aims at improving agricultural land and water management practices in the irrigated areas in western desert state of Rajasthan. The primary object of the project is removal of soil salinity and water jogging from 25,000 hectors of irrigated land in the Chambal command area and Indira Gandhi Nahar Pariyojna (IGNP) through implementation of a horizontal sub surface drainage system.
The system holds out promise of restoring the affected land to its full productive potential. The other projects to be undertaken include complementary measures such as water and land management agricultural support services, research in water logging and salinity control techniques.
