SAN FRANSISCO, Ca. S. Gurdip Singh Sohal, President of Sikh Gurdwara, Fremont, and his other colleagues responded to the wishes of enthusiastic Sikhs and to organize a hurriedly announced demonstration on August 15 to observe it as a “Black Day” in front of the office of Indian Consulate. Some Sikh youths, who recently returned from India, were full of anger and anguish over the killing of Sikh youth by the police in fake encounters, prompted Mr. Sohal and his colleagues to announce the holding of the demonstration. The fact that the time for organizing the protest was very short failed to dampen their enthusiastic spirits.

The demonstration, which was organized at a short notice, was effective and impressive. The demonstrators were able to show their determination to fight out the repressive and oppressive attitude of government of India. They were carrying the banners of “Khalistan Zindabad”, “Bhindranwale Amar Shaheed”, and “Stop Killing in Fake Encounters”, and raising the slogans in support of their demands. The demonstration was led by Bhai Gurdeep Singh Sohal, Bhai Satinder Singh, Sardar Jagjit Singh Boparai, Dr. Gurinder Singh Grewal, Sardar A.S. Pannu, S. Gurdial Singh and other leaders.
