AMRITSAR: The idea of putting into service the bullet proof tractors was mooted by the then Director General of Punjab Police K.P.S.Gill.
A tractor manufacture unit was ordered to produce SO bullet proof tractors for the Punjab police who were pressed into service later last year.
Earlier the security forces had to suffer great losses to neutralize the militants taking shelter in sugarcane fields.
The tractors have proved effective in various “encounters” in the fields recently where security forces killed many militants in the Tam Taran and Majitha area.
