NEW DELHI, India:

The Bharatiya Janata Party has deplored the Shankaracharya of Puri’s statement that Harijans should not be allowed entry into temples.

In a statement issued here, Mr. Kidar Nath Sahani, BJP general secretary, said the Shankaracharya’s stand was singularly unfortunate. Mr. Sahani appealed to all other Shankaracharyas to dissociate themselves from the stand of the Shankaracharya of Puri.

UNI: Janata Party general secretary, Ram Vilas Paswan, demanded the arrest of the Shankaracharya of Pun under the National Security Act for “provoking disharmony and tension among various castes”.

Reacting sharply to the Shankaracharya’s reported observations that Hanijans had no right to enter temples and’ that Brahmins were superior to Hanijans not merely by birth, he has written a letter to the President, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister seeking the holy man’s arrest.
