CHANDIGARH: Birender Singh, former Haryana Congress chief, and 15 other party leaders, who attended the dissidents’ convention in Delhi ‘were expelled from the primary membership of the Congress for six years. ‘They included two legislators we are also members of the All India Congress: Committee (AICC), 13 members of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, including a vice chairman of the state Congress Sewa Dal, and president of one district unit.
In neighboring Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, the Congress remained unaffected by the “split,” at the national level. The only notable leader from Punjab to side with the dissidents was Jagmeet Singh Brar, who was expelled from the Congress by the PCC more than two years ago.
From HP, only Mrs. Sarla Sharma, 4 former PCC chief and now delegate of the AICG, attended the convention. The Chief Minister, Virbhadra Singh, has described the events in Delhi as” most unfortunate” and urged Congressmen to “stand solidly behind” the party president, P.V. Narasimha Rao.
