CHANDIGARH: Balata Senior Superintendent of Police Seta Ram escaped an attempt on his life, while twelve persons, including seven militants, were killed and the son of a security man was kidnapped Oct 14

In an encounter security forces shot dead two unidentified militants near Dhand village in Tarn Taran police district (Amritsar) on Saturday night. Details were sill awaited.

Militants ambushed the convoy of Batala Senior Superintendent of Police Sit a Ram, which was on its way from Amritsar to Batala near Pakharpur village in Batala police district on Friday night. However, the militants who continued firing for 20 minutes escaped when escorting security men took up positions and resumed the fire. Sita Ram who had gone to Amritsar to see off the Governors Advisor, K.L. Watta, escaped unhurt.

A militant identified as Rajinder Singh, committed suicide by consuming cyanide when cornered by security forces at Amritsar on Friday night. His two accom plices escaped. All the three were fleeing after looting R5.20, 000 from one Harjt Singh when security forces chased them and cornered Rajinder Singh.

In an encounter, hardcore militant identified as Anup Singh was killed by security forces, near Mehma village in Ferozepur district on Friday night.

Another hardcore militant identified as Lakhbir Singh alias Lakha allas Fauji committed suicide by consuming cyanide after he was injured in an encounter near Kor Singhwala village in the same district on Friday night.

In another encounter with security forces an unidentified militant was killed near Cheema Khudi village in Batala police district on Saturday morning. One 303 bore rifle, one AK47 magazine and some cartridges were found from the encounter sit.

LUDHIANA: Nine persons were killed Wednesday night. A petrol pump and kid napped an SPO.

Seven persons were gunned down at Mallanpur, 18km from here, while Maghar Singh, a CPM activist, were shot dead in their village, Bassian, under the Raikot police station.

Three militants came to the dhaba at Mullanpur around midnight Wednesday, shot dead Satish Kumar, the owner, and six of his employees. All of them died on the spot.

According to the police, the militants told the dhaba owner that they were killing them because they had not responded to the call for a Punjab bandh.

The militants also looted Rs.16, 500 from petrol Pump and kidnapped one SPO (special police officer) from Jagraon.

The spurt in killings in Ludhiana district has sent shock waves among the people. More than 30 persons have been killed in the district during the first 10 days of this month. The families of four policemen are among those killed by militant during this period. These families have lost 18 members.

Report state top militant Narinder Singh alias Ninda was among nine more killed in Punjab since Wednesday night. Ninda, responsible for over 5Okillings, was killed in an exchange of fire between militants and security forces near Ajuala road in Amritsar: district Wednesday night.

Militants attacked a police party carrying: Ninda to a village for recovery of arms. In the ensuing shootout, Ninda was killed, police said.

Ninda, whose victims were mostly security men, belonged to the Babbar Khalsa”, In other incidents Thursday, two persons were killed and six policemen wounded when a bomb, kept on the carrier of a cycle, exploded at a traffic crossing in Batala Thursday.

Agencies add: Two bomb explosions rocked Sri Hargobindpur town in Batala police district early Thursday, killing two persons and injuring eight.

The victims were identified as Joginder Singh and Gurdev Singh. The injured included six security personnel.

10 SHOT IDENTIFIED: Meanwhile the 10 persons, killed at a house in Makbulpura on Mehta Road in Amritsar late Wednesday night, had been identified as inspector, Prem Singh, head constable Rai Kumar, Naik Ranjit Singh, constables Hira Prasad, Parkash Chand and Romesh Chand all belonging to the ITBP, Dharam Singh and Major Singh, bank guards and Jasbir Singh Police officials said an earlier report was incorrect that the militants took away weapons belonging to the security men as they were not having arms with them. The security men were allowed to reside with their families in the rented house on 2 Hunt for the militants whose strength was described between 10 to 12 was continuing.
