CALCUTTA: Mr Jyoti Basu Chief Minister of West Bengal and an important leader of C.P.(M) in India in a recent media interview has again supported Mrs Indira Gandhi’s operation Bluestar against the Sikhs. Basu said Gandhi had to do that. He also said that Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination was an attack on the country.

Basu appears to be projecting himself as the next Indian Prime Minister with the support of Congress (I) in the event of no single party getting a clear majority in India’s lower house of Parliament according to observers. Basu’s statements on the Operation Bluestar comes in the wake of growing doubts expressed by political parties about the need and utility of the operation which had opened a Pandora’s box for the country. Basu is associated with Stalinism and Hindu fundamentalism despite his occasional criticism of BJ.P.’s extremist policies.
