Chandigarh: S. Surjit Singh Barnala, Chief Minister Punjab, has been authorized by the Akali Dal Parliamentary Board and District Jathedars to decide upon the office-bearers of the S.G.P.C. The election for which is scheduled on November 29.
The Chief Minister has asked all the S.G.P.C. members to reach Chandigarh on November 2728. He will consult every member individually about his preference for the next office bearers. There will be election for the President also.
In the meeting forty delegates demanded that a meeting of the General House should be convened expeditiously to sort out the question of Constitutional bar on the holding of two offices. Mr. Barnala at present has two offices. He is both the Chief Minister and Party President.
S, Balwant Singh later told press reporters that the Chief Minister will call a meeting of the General House of the Akali Dal by Mid-December where the question of the Party President will be settled. The Jathedars are saying either constitution should be followed or properly amended if two offices are to be kept with Barnala. The delegates also reaffirmed their confidence in the leadership of Barnala. Political circles feel that S. Gurcharan Singh Tohra is likely to be re nominated as the official candidate for the President ship of S.G.P.C.
