CHANDIGARH: Former chief minister P.S. Badal claimed here that he never accepted a check of Rs 10 million from Haryana for the SYL canal construction when he was in office. This was wrong and baseless. He said the fact was that he and his party had always fought to safeguard Punjab’s interests on the sharing of the Ravi Beas waters. It was he who had forced the center to reopen the issue, Badal claimed.
He said he took the issue to the Supreme Court and his party had launched a morcha against SYL construction. How could anyone accuse him of selling Punjab’s interest he said? Badal also referred to the Rajiv Longowal accord was not implemented it should also be dropped. Even going by riparian rights Punjab could not be deprived of its river waters, he said.
CALCUTTA: Scientists suspect that air pollution is affecting the marble cladding of the 65 year old Queen Victoria Memorial, the architectural grandeur of which beckons tourists to this former imperial city.
Efflorescence and black Patina have been noticed in some portions of the building especially in areas which receive abnormally low light and air, said Dr. K.K Das.
This is the first time that Indian scientists are undertaking a study on effects of air pollution on the historic monument, the one on Taj Mahal having been done by Italian scientists.
