AMSTERDAM: Australia thrashed India by a whopping 63 margin and won the seven nation BMW hockey tournament which concluded at the Wagner Stadium here June 24 Sunday.

However, the Australians had to wait till the result of the final match between hosts Holland and West Germany before being declared winners,

In the last match of the round robin tournament, Holland held on to a 16th minute penalty corner goal by striker Floris Jan Bovelander to beat West Germany 1-0 in a hard fought match.

The victory margin could have been up by a goal had Dutch captain Marc Delissen not scooped out a penalty stroke awarded eight minutes from the final hooter.

Australia finished with nine points, the same as Pakistan did after steam rolling Britain 52 earlier.

Both finished with a plus six goal difference and the deadlock had to be resolved by taking the greater number of goals scored, Australia had shot 20 goals in the tournament with 14 against while Pakistan had 18 goals for and 12 against.

Pakistan’s Shahbaz Ahmed was named the player of the tournament, while Holland’s Frank Listeria was awarded the title of the best goalkeeper

India’s center forward Jagbir Singh, whom the official records credited with six goals (though he had actually scored four), got the prize for being the highest goal getter of the competition.

Mark Hager got a special prize for scoring three goals a distinction he achieved against India June 24,
