NEW DELHI: Leading athletes from 40 countries are expected to take part in the eighth Asian Track and Field Meet to be held here from November 14 to 19.
The President of the Amateur Athletic Federation of India (AAFI) Suresh Kalmadi, MP announced at a press conference here that the 40 countries belonging to the Asian Amateur Athletics Federation had been invited to participate.
He said arrangements were in full swing for hosting this premier track and field meet in Asia at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Kalmadi said: “The meet will be the biggest sports event to be hosted by India after the 1982 Asian Games.”
There would be 23 events in the men’s section and 19 in women’s including the international invitational which would be held on the concluding day separately.
He said competitive events would begin on November 15 and would be held till November 19 on all days from noon to evening six.
Indian Team
Kalmadi said the Indian team would be selected after the SAF Games being held in October in Islamabad, Pakistan, The basis Of selection would be performance in the Open National Championships, the Masters Meet at Trivandrum, the Nehru Centenary Interactional Permit Meet at Delhi, the SAF games and a camp, he said,
Kalmadi said even though as hosts India could field three athletes in each event, the AAFI would have two in all events and three in only those events where India’s chances are better than those of other countries.
